During hive inspections, however, beekeepers may notice white material inside or on the combs. It may appear as damp white patches or as hard, crystal-like deposits, leading many to suspect disease or pest activity. In reality, these white substances can have several causes, most of which are harmless. This article explains what the white material is, why it appears, and what you should do if you find it.

What is a Honeycomb?

A honeycomb is a network of wax cells built by honeybees in a distinctive hexagonal pattern. These cells serve multiple purposes, including raising brood, storing honey, and preserving pollen for the colony. During honey harvest, beekeepers often remove the combs and extract the honey using a honey extractor. Others choose to harvest sections of comb honey, allowing it to be eaten exactly as the bees produced it. Honeycomb is completely edible and contains natural antioxidants, enzymes, and other beneficial compounds that may support heart health, liver function, and the body’s immune system.

Honeybees construct their comb using perfectly aligned hexagonal cells because this design is remarkably efficient. The six-sided shape fits together without leaving empty spaces, allowing the colony to maximize storage while minimizing the amount of wax required. This geometric arrangement also creates a remarkably strong structure capable of supporting large amounts of honey and developing brood.

Building honeycomb is an energy-intensive task performed by young worker bees. Wax is secreted from specialized glands on the underside of their abdomen as tiny scales. The workers chew these wax flakes until they become soft and pliable before carefully shaping them into the familiar hexagonal cells that eventually make up the comb.

Wax remains stable only within a fairly narrow temperature range, typically between 30°C and 35°C (86°F to 95°F). To maintain these conditions, worker bees constantly regulate the hive’s internal environment by generating heat, cooling the colony through fanning, and controlling humidity. Whether during the heat of summer or the cold of winter, maintaining these conditions is a continuous responsibility shared by thousands of workers.

Worker bees begin producing wax when they are approximately 10 to 18 days old, after first performing other duties such as cleaning cells and feeding developing larvae. Throughout their relatively short lives, they carry out a succession of tasks that keep the colony functioning. When necessary, workers will even sacrifice themselves while defending the hive against predators such as yellow jackets and other threats, placing the colony’s survival above their own.

Identifying White Stuff in Honeycomb

White material in honeycomb is most commonly noticed after winter or during the early spring inspections. Since beekeepers generally avoid opening colonies throughout winter, the first inspection of the new season may reveal white patches or crystalline deposits that were not previously visible.

In many cases, these white deposits are nothing to worry about. They are simply crystallized honey rather than signs of disease or pest infestation. Honey naturally changes from a liquid to a solid state under certain conditions, producing white or pale-colored crystals within the comb. This is a normal physical process and does not indicate that the honey has spoiled.

It is important to distinguish crystallized honey from mold growth. Mold can also appear as white patches on honeycomb, but it develops under very different circumstances. Excess moisture inside the hive, particularly in weakened colonies that lack enough worker bees to ventilate the hive properly, creates ideal conditions for mold to grow.

One mold occasionally found in neglected or dead colonies is Penicillium waksmanii. Mold growth may appear white, gray, blue, or yellow depending on the species involved. Finding mold on comb does not necessarily mean the comb should be discarded immediately. Instead, the beekeeper should first determine why excessive moisture accumulated and address the underlying problem before deciding whether the comb can be cleaned, reused, or should be replaced.

Several factors encourage honey to crystallize naturally:

  • Low temperatures: Raw honey crystallizes more readily when stored between about 10°C and 21°C (50°F to 70°F). Warmer temperatures gradually return crystallized honey to a liquid state.
  • Floral source: The nectar used to produce honey influences how quickly crystallization occurs. Honey from certain plants crystallizes rapidly, while honey from others remains liquid for much longer.
  • Sugar-to-water ratio: Honey with a higher concentration of sugars and relatively lower moisture content tends to crystallize faster than honey containing more water.

What to Do with the White Stuff in Honeycomb

Crystallized honey can be gently warmed to restore its liquid consistency. However, extracting crystallized honey from comb using a honey extractor is often difficult because the hardened honey does not spin out as easily as liquid honey.

For beekeepers, the simplest solution is often to return the affected combs to the colony. Worker bees readily consume and relocate crystallized honey, effectively cleaning the comb for reuse. Placing these combs back into the supers or above the inner cover allows the bees easy access to the stored honey, reducing waste while allowing the colony to make full use of its food reserves.
